It's a Guy Thing

Welcome To The Lush Lagoon Singapore: A Dreamy Escape Where Nature Meets Chic Sophistication

On 1 February 1929, a legendary hotel opened on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. The glamorous Chateau Marmont, perched along the Sunset Strip, quickly became a favorite of Hollywood's elite, blending luxury and privacy in a way that made it iconic. From Marilyn Monroe to Courtney Love, its storied walls have witnessed both scandal and celebration. Yet, this story isn’t about the Marmont—it’s about the other hotel where the entourages of stars stayed while the celebrities made headlines.

Enter The Standard. When it debuted in 1999 just down the road from the Chateau Marmont, The Standard redefined the boutique hotel scene. Designed for a younger, trendier crowd, it became a magnet for creative minds. Its modern design featured Andy Warhol prints, quirky art installations, and an atmosphere that transformed the entire space into a cultural hub. Common areas felt more like nightclubs, with music-filled elevators and a DJ booth doubling as the front desk.

Fast forward to today, and The Standard has expanded its presence globally. The latest addition, The Standard, Singapore, brings the same spirit to the heart of Orchard Road. Nestled among luxury hotels, it distinguishes itself with bold design and a surprisingly accessible price point. The lobby sets the tone with custom mid-century modern furniture and a botanical-themed installation, making every corner feel alive with creativity.

Verena Haller, Chief Design Officer at The Standard Hotels, shares that the original Hollywood location was about simplicity and vibe rather than opulence. "It was simple—no doorman, no air-conditioning—but people loved it for the atmosphere. That’s what we continue to bring into every new location."

Singapore's lush, urban garden vibe inspired the design, with local studio Ministry of Design (MOD) collaborating closely with The Standard’s team. Colin Seah, MOD’s founder, aimed for a playful take on tropical luxury, blending vibrant aesthetics with natural elements. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a striking terrarium reception desk, a departure from traditional formal counters, complete with whimsical animal figurines.

Throughout the hotel, this cheeky design language continues. Chrome puppy figurines roam the lobby, occasionally accompanied by playful silver pebbles that mimic droppings, adding a dose of irreverence to the space. The 143 guest rooms balance compact layouts with clever design—vintage leather pouches for storage, open wall hooks instead of closets, and modular furniture for maximum flexibility. A ribbed wooden canopy stretches over the bed, adding warmth and a signature design touch seen in other Standard properties.

Bathrooms, with their white and yellow subway tiles, bring a retro flair reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s style. Meanwhile, the in-house restaurant, Kaya at The Standard, leans into a moody yet bold design with pendant lighting, hanging plants, and a mural blending '80s glassware prints with 3D florals crafted by the artist’s family.

The outdoor areas elevate the experience further. A multi-tiered garden courtyard connects the restaurant and pool area, featuring reflective wall installations, a swim-up bar, and a lush, versatile landscape perfect for everything from brunch gatherings to DJ-powered dance nights.

Haller emphasizes that The Standard, Singapore was crafted not just for guests but for the local community. "We want it to be a neighborhood hotspot where people come to connect, not just stay."

The Standard, Singapore is more than a luxury hotel—it's a cultural experience, blending playful design with a welcoming atmosphere, making it a destination where both creativity and comfort thrive.
